Lesson Title Comparing Arguments Between Texts: To Build or Not to Build?

Lesson Purpose

Today’s lesson will help students evaluate the support for a given argument. Students will also use the skill of reading and comparing two sources to determine which has the strongest argument and the most support--a skill that they will later use in numerous real-life situations.  It also emphasizes the necessity of removing personal bias in decision-making.These skills will help them be successful on the GED RLA extended response portion of the test.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to read, compare, and analyze two texts and determine which of the two texts has the strongest argument based on evidence. Then students will answer text-dependent questions and write an opinion piece citing this evidence.

“I can analyze and interpret two or more texts providing conflicting information on the same topic and identify where the texts disagree on matters of fact and determine which source has the strongest argument and the most textual evidence.”

  • Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. (Apply this standard to texts of appropriate complexity as outlined by Standard 10.)

Writing
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
