Lesson PurposeThis lesson shows students how math skills can be applied to make improvements to their own living spaces. It also shows them how they would use these math skills if they were employed in the trade jobs of carpet laying or tile setting. This lesson builds on the unit’s aim to help students explore trade jobs. |

Lesson ObjectivesAt the end of this lesson, students will be able to calculate square footage and the amount of materials needed for an installation and calculate the cost including taxes. Students will watch the instructor make calculations for a carpet or tile installation for the classroom. Students will then work in groups of three to make calculations for carpet and tile installation from a given blueprint, and, finally, students will work independently to make calculations for carpet installation in a different room somewhere in the building.
