Lesson Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is for students to understand that the rules for multiplying polynomials are analogous to the rules for multiplying integers. Students apply the rules for multiplying by building upon previous knowledge and understanding of polynomial terms.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to demonstrate multiplying two binomials and understand how to apply multiplication to area or word problems that contain binomials. Students will complete a worksheet exercising these skills with a level of 80% correctness and write an exit slip detailing their progression.

Algebra and Functions - Level E
  • Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. [NOTE: Emphasis should be on operations with polynomials.]

Supporting Standards
  • Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems. Include equations arising from linear and quadratic functions, and simple rational and exponential functions.*

  • Rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest, using the same reasoning as in solving equations. For example, rearrange Ohm’s law V = IR to highlight resistance R. )* [Also see 7.EE.2 and F.IF.8]

  • Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. [NOTE: A “standard algorithm” might be any accepted algorithm that fits the experience and needs of the students.]
