Lesson Purpose

Mean, median, mode, and range can be found in every content area across all academia. Having this skill helps students to become critical thinkers, which enable them to make sense of the world around them. The study of statistics also helps people learn how to make sense of the vast amount of data in our world, and helps people learn to identify when data is be being use inappropriately.

Although this lesson is structured toward the learning side of gaining procedural skill and fluency, the use of this method in application, will solidify independent thinkers who can look at situations to obtain their own set of numbers rather than the numbers be given to them.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to calculate central tendency using mean, median, mode, and range. They will be able to organize and distinguish how this type of data can be gathered and applied to real life situations.

  • Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:

    a. Reporting the number of observations.

    b. Describing the nature of the attribute under investigation, including how it was measured and its units of measurement.

    c. Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered.

    d. Relating the choice of measures of center and variability to the shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data were gathered.
