Lesson Title Introduction to Pythagorean Theorem
Unit Title
NRS Level Level 4
Length of Lesson 60 minutes
Lesson Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is to allow students to visually experience the purpose and application of the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will learn to use the formula to solve problems logically and increase their problem solving ability.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to

  • identify a right triangle.
  • determine if a triangle is a right, acute, or obtuse triangle based on the measure of its sides.
  • calculate the missing side length of a right triangle.
Student Target

“I can...

  • identify a right triangle."
  • apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine a missing side length.”
CCR Focus Standards
Geometry - Level D
  • Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

Supporting Standards
  • Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole- number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s^3 and A = 6 s^2 to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.

  • Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.

  • Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the form x^2 = p and x^3 = p, where p is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that √2 is irrational.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (MP.3)

  • Model with mathematics. (MP.4)

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (MP.8)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.1 Effectively contribute to a team through cooperation, leadership, and giving and accepting critical feedback to work toward a common goal.

  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.

  • E.8 Interact with others in a professional manner.
