Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to recognize a digit represents 10 times the value of what it represents in the place to its right.

Student Target

“I can use place value to fluently multiply and divide.”

CCR Focus Standards
Number and Ratios - Level C
  • Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Supporting Standards
  • Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.

  • Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Model with mathematics. (MP.4)

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (MP.8)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.1 Effectively contribute to a team through cooperation, leadership, and giving and accepting critical feedback to work toward a common goal.

  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.
