Unit Title All About Shapes
NRS Level Level 2; Level 3;
Length of Lesson 90 minutes
Lesson Purpose

The purpose of the lesson is to teach students the concept of perimeter and area regarding two-dimensional figures, how they can be kinesthetically calculated, and what they are used for in real life.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to

  • explain the difference between area and perimeter.
  • calculate perimeter of a rectangle, square, and triangle using graph paper.
  • calculate area of a rectangle, square, and triangle using graph paper.
  • calculate the perimeter of a rectangle, square, and triangle using the perimter formulas.
  • calculate the perimeter of a rectanlge, square, and triangle using the area formulas.
Student Target

“I can...

  • calculate perimeter and area of rectangles, squares, and triangles using graph paper."
  • calculate perimeter and area of rectanlges, squares, and triangles using the proper formulas."
CCR Focus Standards
Geometry - Level B
  • Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.

    a. A square with side length 1 unit, called “a unit square,” is said to have “one square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area.

    b. A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.

Supporting Standards
  • Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (MP.3)

  • Use appropriate tools strategically. (MP.5)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.

  • E.8 Interact with others in a professional manner.
