Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of percent
  • Convert decimals to a percentage
  • Convert fractions to a percentage
  • Work basic percent problems
Student Target

“I can find numbers equivalent to a percentage and find the missing part of a percent problem.”

CCR Focus Standards
Number and Ratios - Level D
  • Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.

  • Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

Supporting Standards
  • Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole- number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2)

  • Look for and make use of structure. (MP.7)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.1 Effectively contribute to a team through cooperation, leadership, and giving and accepting critical feedback to work toward a common goal.

  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.

  • E.8 Interact with others in a professional manner.
