Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Translate words into expressions
  • Solve expressions from given variables
Student Target

“I can translate and solve expressions from given variables.”

CCR Focus Standards
Algebra and Functions - Level C
  • Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation “Subtract y from 5” as 5 – y.

  • Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.

Algebra and Functions - Level D
Supporting Standards
  • Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.

  • Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (MP.1)

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2)

  • Attend to precision. (MP.6)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.1 Effectively contribute to a team through cooperation, leadership, and giving and accepting critical feedback to work toward a common goal.

  • E.6 Identify and effectively use skills and materials needed for a particular task.

  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.
