Lesson Title Proportional Relationships
Unit Title Ratio/Proportion
NRS Level Level 4
Length of Lesson 120 minutes
Lesson Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about proportional reasoning in order to solve real life problems. Students will use the knowledge of ratios, learned in the previous lesson, to solve problems with proportional relationships. Most students will be able to relate to determining grocery prices, mixing cleaning or juice concentrates, driving at a certain speed (miles / hour), etc. Also, students will learn how to use proportional reasoning for recipe conversions, miles per gallon, and money per hour. These skills are important for students to use in their daily lives.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1) Determine if two quantities are proportional by equivalent fractions and cross products
2) Rewrite word problems as a proportion problem
3) Write proportion problems in equation form
4) Manipulate proportion problems in order to choose the correct set up in a multiple choice question

Student Target

“I can…” determine if two quantities are proportional by analyzing the “Correct Me if I am Wrong” sheet. (critique the reasoning of others)
“I can…” set up proportion problems by translating word problems into proportion problems.
“I can…” rewrite proportion problems in equation form by using setting the cross products equal to each other.
“I can…” choose the correct proportion and/or equation based on the information given in a word problem.

CCR Focus Standards
Supporting Standards
