Lesson Purpose

Students will learn to organize their extended responses with topic sentences, support their claims with evidence from the text, and add their own commentary and analysis in order to be successful on the writing portion of the GED exam.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to write the body and conclusion of an RLA extended response. Students will write a body paragraph with a partner and then write a body paragraph and a conclusion independently.

Student Target

I can write a body paragraph and conclusion of an extended response.

  • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

  • Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. (Apply this standard to texts of appropriate complexity as outlined by Standard 10.)
