Budgeting with Math

The purpose of this lesson is to equip students with the knowledge needed to be able to budget their money wisely.  They need to be able to shop for groceries, cleaning supplies, and hygiene items without overspending.  They also need to be able to see how much money they are bringing in and how much they are spending and budget accordingly.  This lesson is also beneficial for working in retail stores.

Mean, Median, Mode, Range

Mean, median, mode, and range can be found in every content area across all academia. Having this skill helps students to become critical thinkers, which enable them to make sense of the world around them. The study of statistics also helps people learn how to make sense of the vast amount of data in our world, and helps people learn to identify when data is be being use inappropriately.

Although this lesson is structured toward the learning side of gaining procedural skill and fluency, the use of this method in application, will solidify independent thinkers who can look at situations to obtain their own set of numbers rather than the numbers be given to them.

Back It Up- Recognizing How Authors Support Their Argument

The ability to recognize the effects of point of view and to locate evidence in written materials will help students to form decisions based upon facts and careful inferences rather than unsubstantiated opinions. Reading objectively will ultimately affect the strength of their own speaking and writing abilities.

Close Reading Strategies - Industrialization and Child Labor

This lesson encourages students to use close reading skills to understand the central meaning of the text and to infer details to answer questions about the text.  The topic of this lesson builds background knowledge on the enduring social studies issue of individual rights vs. the good of the community.  The skills they will use for this and this content knowledge is necessary for the GED, and will give them experience reading and analyzing primary sources.

The purpose of this lesson is for students to demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English by correcting any punctuation, capitalization, grammar, or spelling errors in the given paragraph. This lesson also makes students aware of the structure of texts, including how specific sentences relate to each other and the whole.

Fiction Writing Lab

The purpose of this lesson is for students to deepen their understanding of point of view by applying what they have learned to create their own short story. By writing and expressing the point of view from a character of their own creation, students will be able to develop a deep understanding of what it means to look at the world from a different perspective while at the same time synthesizing and applying what they already know of narrator’s point of view and a character’s point of view. Students will have to write with a consistent point of view for their story to make sense, and will have opportunities to give and receive peer feedback, simulating a workplace experience. By continuing with our theme of coal, students will be able to learn more about coal and at the same time, have the opportunity to express themselves and be creative.

Part 1 of Essay on a Goal Achiever

Students will find relevant articles about a person who achieved a great goal. Students will analyze the articles for credibility and usefulness and use those articles to answer questions about the person. The students will write an informative essay on the person in a subsequent lesson. This lesson is important in that it will hopefully inspire students to set and achieve their own goals. This lesson will help students build their writing skills.

Another purpose of this lesson is for students to understand the correlation between a historical event and the timeline.

Writing to Inform

This lesson will give students the opportunity to expand their knowledge about an area of coal and also gives them a choice in what to research. Students will research their topic and practice writing for the purpose of informing an audience. Students will also be able to apply their skills using correct writing conventions and effective organizational structure.
