Career Clusters 2017-01-19T19:50:18-05:00

There are 16 career clusters leading to various career pathways. Instructors can incorporate these clusters into curriculum design and instruction. Adult education services will include workforce preparation activities and training for specific occupations; this will allow students to achieve their educational and career goals. Lesson Title Equations for Trade Jobs
Unit Title Construction & Trades
NRS Level Level 4
Length of Lesson 60 minutes
Lesson Purpose

The use of equations is important in many trade jobs—often to prevent problems, such as using too much electricity and causing an outage or applying too much pressure so that something breaks. The guided and independent practice problems are designed to show students how they could use this particular math skill in trade jobs.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to create and solve equations to solve word problems in the context of trade jobs. Students will watch the instructor model three examples, solve real-world word problems with a partner, solve word problems independently, and create their own word problem and solution.

Student Target

“I can create and solve equations to solve word problems for trade jobs.”

CCR Focus Standards
Algebra and Functions - Level D
  • Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r, where p, q, and rare specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?

Supporting Standards
  • Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

  • Solve linear equations in one variable.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (MP.1)

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2)

  • Model with mathematics. (MP.4)
