Lesson Title Ohm's Law: Equations for Electricians
Unit Title Construction & Trades
NRS Level Level 4
Length of Lesson 60 minutes
Lesson Purpose

This lesson is designed to improve students’ employability skills by teaching them how to solve basic electrical word problems using Ohm’s Law. Students are encouraged to consider the trade job of electrician as they see how the math skills relate directly to electrical work.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to solve basic electrical word problems using the equations of Ohm’s Law. Students will watch two instructional videos, watch instructor model examples, solve word problems with a partner, and solve problems independently. Students will take a short quiz to assess their mastery of the skill.

Student Target

“I can solve basic electrical word problems using the equations of Ohm’s Law.”

CCR Focus Standards
Algebra and Functions - Level D
  • Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r, where p, q, and rare specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?

Supporting Standards
  • Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

  • Solve linear equations in one variable.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (MP.1)

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2)

  • Model with mathematics. (MP.4)
