Career Clusters

Career Clusters 2017-01-19T19:50:18-05:00

There are 16 career clusters leading to various career pathways. Instructors can incorporate these clusters into curriculum design and instruction. Adult education services will include workforce preparation activities and training for specific occupations; this will allow students to achieve their educational and career goals. Lesson Title Medical Math and Unit Conversions
Unit Title Measurement
NRS Level Level 3
Length of Lesson 120 minutes
Lesson Purpose

This lesson is intended to better prepare students interested in the SRNA program. The purpose of this lesson is for students to be able to determine the appropriate unit of measure for an object and be able to convert the unit of measure when necessary. The student will also be comparing the metric measurements to the customary U.S. units of measure as it relates to the medical/nursing field and SRNA requirements.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

select an appropriate unit of measure for a given task
manipulate a unit of measure using scalars and unit rates

Student Target

"I can

  • apply the correct unit to the quantity I am measuring.
  • scale the unit of measure appropriately.
  • use a unit rate appropriately in a calculation."
CCR Focus Standards
Number and Ratios - Level D
  • Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

Supporting Standards
  • Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l).6 Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.

  • Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (MP.1)

  • Use appropriate tools strategically. (MP.5)

  • Attend to precision. (MP.6)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.1 Effectively contribute to a team through cooperation, leadership, and giving and accepting critical feedback to work toward a common goal.

  • E.6 Identify and effectively use skills and materials needed for a particular task.

  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.
