Lesson Title Two-Dimensional Shapes
Unit Title All About Shapes
NRS Level Level 2
Length of Lesson 90 minutes
Lesson Purpose

The purpose of the lesson is to develop student vocabulary and content knowledge in geometry.  This lesson teaches students the names and attributes of two-dimensional figures, guiding them to applications and reasoning about the real world.

Note to Instructor:  The lessons, in this unit, are intended for students who have zero to little knowledge and understanding of shapes, perimeter, and area.  These lessons intend to develop the conceptual understanding of geometric basics.

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • identify two-dimensional shpaes.
  • state properties of two-dimensional shapes.
Student Target

"I can name two-dimensional shapes and give at least one characteristic of each."

CCR Focus Standards
Geometry - Level B
  • Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Supporting Standards
  • Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. (MP.3)

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. (MP.8)
