Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and construct composite shapes.

Student Target

“I can create composite shapes out of basic shapes and use basic shapes to create composite shapes”

CCR Focus Standards
Geometry - Level B
  • Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.

Supporting Standards
  • Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

  • Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of the area of the shape.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Model with mathematics. (MP.4)

  • Attend to precision. (MP.6)

  • Look for and make use of structure. (MP.7)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.8 Interact with others in a professional manner.

  • E.7 Accurately analyze information and respond appropriately.
