Basic Length Measurement

To discuss measurement in the context of the workplace to introduce students to measuring on the job

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Comparing Numbers

To build on students’ prior understanding of place value as they begin to compare numerical properties

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

  • Number and Ratios

Composite Shapes

The purpose of the lesson is to have students explore composite shapes and discover how they interact with two- and three-dimensional figures.

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Counting and Grouping to Add/Subtract

To inform students that, in math, there are often many ways to get to the same end (via using different smaller shapes to create a larger composite)

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

  • Number and Ratios

Divide It Up!

To introduce fractions in order for students to build on prior knowledge and expand toward calculation with them

Employability Skills Lesson 3

Now that students have an idea of what jobs are available to them with their current skill level, they can begin to research what each job entails.  This lesson gives them the opportunity to use hands-on math to determine more detailed salary information and to see what skills they will need to get to the next level into a “dream” job.

Equivalent Fractions

The purpose of this lesson is to show students how relevant and necessary fractions are in everyday life, as well as in the field of health care work. We use fractions in ways we do not even realize, especially when it comes to estimating using commonly known fractions. By using these common fractions as a base of reference, understanding the conversion of fractions becomes much easier to understand.

Estimating Measurement

To build on prior work with measurement to increase fluency and application via estimation

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Is It Equal?

To introduce numerical value comparison ahead of more complex activities so that students can identify similarities and differences in value

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

It's Party Time!

Dividing is important to all life-skills, including monthly budgeting, social activities, and grocery bills. Dividing is a building block for all higher order math skills.

Let's Sort It Out!

To introduce numerical value comparison ahead of more complex activities so that students can identify similarities and differences in value

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Line 'em up!

To build on prior conceptual knowledge of fractions toward recognition of benchmarks

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Make a Ruler

To build on prior work with measurement with application in student-created measuring devices to outline the importance of precision

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Mental Math--Comparing Numbers

To increase students’ mental math, building on prior understanding of place value

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

More Addition Work

To build on students’ prior understanding of basic computation to lead toward higher-level math

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Place Value Division

To connect students’ prior knowledge of place value with fluency techniques for multiplying and dividing

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Place Value: Ones and Tens

To increase students’ awareness of numerical values in addition and subtraction

Real World Perimeter and Area

The benefit of students understanding the properties of perimeter and area gives the learners tools to reason with in daily life. Students will have learned skills that can be transferred both to their personal lives and their jobs.  This lesson will help students understand the concepts of perimeter and area and how to use this knowledge in home and office improvements and/or repairs.

  • Geometry

Regrouping

To give students additional practice with addition and subtraction with attention to fluency

GED Content Areas

  • Number and Ratios

Rounding

To introduce rounding as a method for estimation

The Shape of Things to Come

Students will develop transferable knowledge and skills of distinguishing, organizing, categorizing and replicating items based on identifiable features. Skills learned in this lesson prepare students for a variety of workplace scenarios such as stocking inventory, dental assistance, clerical duties, data analysis, home decorating, architecture, etc.

Three-Dimensional Shapes

The purpose of the lesson is to teach students proper names and attributes of three-dimensional figures.  Students will learn the basics of three-dimensional shpaes including:  how they are different/similar to two-dimensional figures, and how they unfold into "net".

  • Number and Ratios

Two-Dimensional Shapes

The purpose of the lesson is to develop student vocabulary and content knowledge in geometry.  This lesson teaches students the names and attributes of two-dimensional figures, guiding them to applications and reasoning about the real world.

Note to Instructor:  The lessons, in this unit, are intended for students who have zero to little knowledge and understanding of shapes, perimeter, and area.  These lessons intend to develop the conceptual understanding of geometric basics.

Two-Dimensional Shapes: Area and Perimeter

The purpose of the lesson is to teach students the concept of perimeter and area regarding two-dimensional figures, how they can be kinesthetically calculated, and what they are used for in real life.

Whole Number Operations

This purpose of this lesson is for students to practice fluency in the four operations, as it is important to have accuracy, speed, and understanding of numbers when working in the health field. This will also be an opportunity for instructors to identify and address any misconceptions students may have in the foundational operations.

Word Problem Strategies

The purpose of this lesson is to show students that knowing how to think critically about a problem and planning a way to attack it translates directly to problems in everyday life. In the field of healthcare, students will come upon many problems that they may not have the answer to, but must be quick on their feet to think about the problem and how to come up with a solution. When students practice their problem solving skills on word problems, they are developing their reasoning skills for real life problems. Additionally, many of the situations in healthcare that students will be using math in will not be in a nice, neat algorithm, but will be in the form of language, per a doctor or nurse’s instructions, for example. Students will have to know how to identify the problem, and figure out a way to meet the need.
