Lesson Title Three-Dimensional Shapes
Unit Title All About Shapes
NRS Level Level 1; Level 2;
Length of Lesson 90 minutes
Lesson Purpose

The purpose of the lesson is to teach students proper names and attributes of three-dimensional figures.  Students will learn the basics of three-dimensional shpaes including:  how they are different/similar to two-dimensional figures, and how they unfold into "net".

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • recognize three-dimensional figures.
  • distinguish between two- and three-dimensional figures.
  • recognize the new of three-dimensional shapes.
Student Target

"I can...

  • properly name three-dimensional shapes."
  • give at least one characteristic of each three-dimensional shape."
  • match three-dimensional figures to their nets."
CCR Focus Standards
Geometry - Level A
  • Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).

Supporting Standards
  • Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. (MP.2)

  • Use appropriate tools strategically. (MP.5)

  • Look for and make use of structure. (MP.7)

KYAE Employability Standards
  • E.6 Identify and effectively use skills and materials needed for a particular task.

  • E.8 Interact with others in a professional manner.
